Brenna McCrimmon - Ayde Mori (Balkan Folk)

Folk songs and tunes from the Balkans performed by Brenna McCrimmon, Muammer Ketencoglu, Sumru Agiryuruyen and Cevdet Erek. This album comes from Turkey but it has songs from the Balkans, mostly Macedonia and Bosnia. One of the best ethnic albums I have heard this year. Definitely a MUST HAVE for all ethno lovers.

Brenna McCrimmon:
Brenna first discovered Balkan music in her hometown of Toronto, Canada in 1984 and it has taken her far and wide since then. Whether it's Balkan with Muammer and Sumru, the simmering sounds of Thrace with Selim Sesler, the Balkan dance beats of California band Edessa, the old city style of New York based Orkestra Keyif… the music is always home. Of course it helps when you can bring your knitting on the road…

Muammer Ketencoglu:
As a child Muammer learned a great many things from listening to radio from the Balkans, especially politics, but he was most drawn to the music. After many turns and adventures he discovered the accordion and made that his instrument. He began working with Sumru first and then the others.

Sumru Agiryuruyen:
The sumru is a fork-tailed sea bird known in English as the polar tern. Because of its short legs it cannot walk very quickly but of all the birds of the air, it has the longest migration. It sets out every year without fail, flying from pole to pole, over all the continents, over all the countries and peoples of the world. And as it flies, it hears their sounds and their music.

Cevdet Erek:
Cevdet started playing drums with Turkish alt-rock group Nekropsi in 1991. He was voluntarily kidnapped to play percussion with the others in 1997 and he has no regrets. He's been making a lot of electronic sounds lately….
